Kamailio and Busy Lamp Fields (BLF)

BLF is a PBX specific term for monitoring other phones for their call states: available, ringing, busy.

In SIP, BLF is specified using presence extensions for event dialog-info. Kamailio can offer this feature using the presence related modules along with dialog module (which tracks the call states):

  • presence
  • presence_xml (if presence states are also wanted)
  • presence_dialoginfo
  • pua
  • pua_dialoginfo
  • dialog

Many SIP phones support this feature, lighting specific LEDs for each monitored extension (phone number/SIP account). Among such phones:

  • snom
  • polycom
  • cisco
  • yealink

Call pickup in SIP is done on top of this feature.

This tutorial presents the changes done to default kamailio.cfg for Kamailio v4.3.0 (development version, on February 9, 2015).

The new config is rather minimal in terms of presence extensions and other telephony feature, targeting to provide a getting started point for BLF deployments.

Config Changes

This section lists the diff between default kamailio.cfg and the new config enabling the BLF support.

The modules presence and presence_xml were part of default kamailio.cfg, being loaded when WITH_PRESENCE is defined.

In addition, the following modules are loaded:

  • presence_dialoginfo
  • pua
  • pua_dialoginfo
  • dialog

Besides setting parameters for presence and dialog module, in route[RELAY] is added an IF block for dialog-related requests to publish the states (by setting FLT_DLGINFO flag) and managing dialog with dlg_manage().

In this section is the entire kamailio.cfg with BLF support.

Remarks

  • mysql is used as database backend for this configuration file
  • authentication and persistent location are enabled, other features of default config file can be enabled as needed (e.g., NAT traversal, TLS, accounting)
  • you must update server_address parameter for presence module to match your server IP address
modparam("presence", "server_address", "sip:192.168.178.54:5060" )
  • set override_lifetime for pua_dialoginfo module to fit better your environment (see the readme of the module for further hints)
  • you may need to change the value for force_single_dialog of presence_dialog module based on the supported BLF document format of the SIP phones you are using
